biography

A New Jersey native, Rich Kim has committed his life to arts/education. A classically trained pianist since he was five years old, he was always involved in theater, music, and dance - recreationally, competitively, and professionally - even winning the NJ Playwrights Festival in 1999 for his original one act, The Seven Wonders of the World, when he was just a senior in high school.

Originally a performing arts major at The Boston Conservatory (MA) upon graduating high school, he later transferred to Rutgers University - Mason Gross School of the Arts (NJ) with a BFA in Painting & Sculpture under the instruction of Rudy Serra, Lauren Ewing, Mel Edwards, Steve DiBenedetto, Tom Nozkowski, Martha Rosler, John Yau, and Kara Walker; with a minor in Creative Writing. He received his teaching certificate from Massachusetts College of Art, under the direction of John Crowe, one of the founders of TAB; and later received his Masters of Art in Art Education from Maryland Institute College of Art - writing a thesis on Performance-Based Pedagogy which provided research and strategies to create unconventional and innovative ways of improving student engagement in the art classroom.

Aside from being a high school art teacher for over 20 years, he has taught in the art education program at Montserrat College of Art and is currently a lecturer in the graduate program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. He has a video series entitled Curricular Considerations in Contemporary Art Education and is working on an art education book through Davis Publications. He frequently presents at state and national conferences, as well as leads workshops in various school districts providing strategies on how to contemporize art curriculum. He is the 2019 recipient of the Norfolk County Teachers' Association's Honor Award.
